Dear friends,

The South African Municipal Workers Union (SAMWU) received with shock and
disgusst the news about brutal attacks against striking Daewoo Workers. SAMWU
condemns in the strongest terms these atrocities by the company, their
government and police. These attacks should be stopped with immediate
effect.

SAMWU expresses its support and solidarity with the Daewoo workers and their
families, and with the Confederation of Trade Unions in South Korea. We will
do everything possible to join in protests against Daewoo and the
Government.

Our hearts will always be with the workers and their families.

Yours in Solidarity.

Dear comrades,

We would like to convey our internationalist solidarity with the corageous
struggle of the Daewoo workers. The militancy of the Korean workers has
always been an inspiration to the labour movement worldwide.

We have distributed your appeal for solidarity in the British labour
movement, specially amongst our comrades in the car industry and we will do
our best to organise solidarity and awareness of your struggle.

Here in Britain workers in the car industry are also under attack and
struggling back as Fords, Rover, Vauxhall, Nissan and other car
manufacturers announce mass lay-offs and plant closures.

In the past, car companies were able to divert the struggle of workers on
nationalistic lines ("defend British jobs", "defend French jobs", etc),
trying to play the workers in one country against those in other countries
with the threat of transferring production over national boundaries.
Interestingly in the latest dispute at Vauxhall these tendencies have been
broken down and we have seen joint action of GM workers all over Europe on
the same day against the threat of closure of the Luton plant in Britain.

The experience in Britain is that any concessions that the workers make in
exchange for the promise of "saving jobs" or saving some jobs are useless as
the bosses always end up breaking their promises.

Car manufacturing has been particularly hit by the madness of the capitalist
system in the form of massive overproduction. In the long run the struggle of
car workers all over the world must be linked to the struggle to overthrow
the capitalist system.

PS We would be very interested in knowing more about your Power of the
Working Class (Preparatory Group) organisation. We have tried to look at our
web site but it seems that none of the links to English articles is working,
and unfortunately none of our comrades reads Korean.

The kind of slogans that we have been raising in these struggles are very
similar to the ones you advance for the struggle of Daewoo workers: "occupy
the plant", "nationalise under workers control with no compensation" etc.

We are an internation tendency defending the ideas of Marxism and our
comrades are active in the workers and trade union movement in countries
around the world. You can have a look at our web site "In Defence of Marxism"
(http://www.marxist.com) so that you can get a more clear picture of our
views.

We hope to hear from you soon.

Revolutionary greetings from South Africa. Your call for messages of
solidarity to all of the striking and sacked workers (and their families)
from Daewoo has been received here in South Africa.

As a long-time communist and political activist within the liberation
movement here I want to express my full solidarity with the courageous
actions of the Daewoo workers as they struggle against the corporatist
capitalism that now threatens to send workers the world over back to the dark
ages. Rest assured that I, alongside many other progressive activists amongst
the left, community and unions will spread the word about what the Kim
Dae-jung regime is doing and do our utmost to expose the lies, hypocrisy and
inhumane actions that are being perpetuated on the Daewoo workers and all
workers and poor people in your country. Even though the situation is not as
grave in South Africa, the same capitalist neo-liberalism that informs the
present attacks in your country are mirrored here in South Africa and the
Southern African region - our struggles are the same and our strength is in
our solidarity.

FORWARD WITH THE STRUGGLE OF THE DAEWOO WORKERS
DOWN WITH THE LIES AND HYPOCRISY OF CAPITALISM
SOLIDARITY OF ALL WORKERS

Yours in struggle,
